Kristy Townsend, PhD

Kristy Townsend, Ph.D. is a neuroscientist with around 20 years of research experience in the regulation of metabolic health. She is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Neurologic Surgery at The Ohio State University and Adjunct Associate Professor at University of Maine, where she was previously faculty from 2014-2020.

In addition to being an academic researcher conducting biomedical research focused on neural plasticity, energy balance, and metabolic health, Townsend also is co-founder of a Maine-based biotech startup (and University of Maine spin-out) called Neuright, Inc. Neuright is based in Orono, ME and is conducting R&D on a patent-pending theragnostic medical device for the diagnosis of small fiver peripheral neuropathy. Townsend was born and raised in Maine and is a University of Maine alum.

Townsend has been on the BioME Board of Directors since 2018 and has served as Secretary of the Board from 2018-2020. Townsend serves on both Education and Development committees for BioME, and was the moderator for the first several years of BioME’s signature Women in Bioscience event.
