BioME Student Showcase 2023 Recap
The BioME Student Showcase is an exciting opportunity for aspirational scientists to showcase their passion for research and bioscience. Each year, Maine high school and college students present their original life science-focused research projects in competition for cash and academic prizes.
On May 3, 2023, BioME organized the fifth annual BioME Student Showcase at Bangor Arts Exchange in Bangor, ME. A panel of judges, industry experts, and mentors were present to evaluate the presentations of 8 college and 12 high school students selected for their original biotech research.

Day 1 featured key player’s in Maine’s technology transfer network discussing new resources, funding opportunities and success stories and was followed by an exciting BioStartup showcase where we heard from 5 bioscience entrepreneurs and their emerging technology businesses.
The technology transfer panel featured Susan Ahern (MaineHealth Innovations), Renee Kelly (University of Maine), Judy Sproule (MDI Biological Laboratory), and was moderated by Greg Fryer (Verrill Dana). The BioStartup presentations included Cem Giray (Salmonics, Inc.), Jason Hine, MD (HaloMed, Inc.), Ariel Shevenell (Signal Insights), Jerry Collins (Treadwell, Inc.), Kristy Townsend, PhD (Neuright), and was moderated by Paul Fitzpatrick (Maine Center for Entrepreneurs).
On Day 2, life science visionary, Juan Enriquez, TedTalk Star, Managing Director, Bestselling Author and Investor, presented an incredibly thought-provoking keynote address. The keynote was followed by a panel dedicated to navigating life science business and workforce in 2021.
The panel featured Catherine Longley, JD (Jackson Laboratory), Julie Cross, PhD (IDEXX), Aileen Huang-Saad, PhD (Roux Institute), Dan Belyea (Maine Community College System), and was moderated by Toby Ahrens, PhD (FocusMaine). This event was organized in collaboration with Maine Center for Entrepreneurs.
Women in Bioscience 2021
Watch our fourth annual Women in Bioscience, virtually. This event featured a moderated panel discussion of acclaimed female scientists and entrepreneurs focusing on leadership, career stories, and obstacles for Maine women in bioscience.
In this inspiring live event Aileen Huang-Saad, PhD (The Roux Institute), Stacey Harris (Consigli Construction Co.), Melissa Glenn, PhD (Colby College), Joan Gordon (Maine Molecular Quality Controls), and Kristy Townsend, PhD (Ohio State University and University of Maine, moderator) discussed their personal stories as Maine women in the industry.
The panel was followed by an interactive workshop “Imposter Syndrome: Understanding and Coping with a Potential Barrier to Success” lead by Shannon McCoy, PhD (University of Maine). Later in the evening a networking reception was held at The Roux Institute’s collaboration café and deck that overlooks Casco Bay.

The 1st place recipient of the BioME Student Showcase, Patrick Wahlig (Falmouth High School), also made an appearance to speak about his research of Maine striped bass and stable isotope analysis. BioME Legislative Update & COVID-19 Vaccine Briefing
Watch our our Legislative Update & COVID-19 Vaccine Briefing now! Each year, BioME hosts a Legislative Reception to provide our members and supporters to with an opportunity to speak directly with Maine State Legislators about their policy needs. In place of our in-person event, we held a Zoom meeting and gathered global and state health officials from Biotechnology Innovation Organization, Husson University and Eastern Maine Medical Center/Northern Light Health to provide information regarding the science and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Attendees also heard from Maine State Legislators regarding their committee work, and legislative priorities around the COVID-19 vaccine and Maine’s life science industry. The Science of COVID-19
Watch the BioME webinar dedicated to “The Science of COVID-19” with Maine’s best epidemiologists, virologists, infectious disease & public health experts. The goal of this virtual event was to facilitate communication and collaboration among Maine’s bioscience community, and the general public, regarding the specificity of the virus and the disease it causes, research progress, testing, possible vaccines and treatment, epidemiology and virology in general, all from a scientific perspective.
Industry Exploration – Biotech Panel
Organized by Educate Maine in partnership with BioME. This industry exploration panel discussion focused on careers in biotech. Attendees heard from four panelists who have built their careers within Maine’s biotech industry. Attendees also had the chance to get their questions answered during a live Q&A.
