Meet Five BioME Middle School Scholarship Recipients 2023

School’s out for summer! BioME funds five scholarships for middle schoolers to attend the Maine School of Science and Mathematics summer camp

With Maine schools out for summer break, we are excited to announce that Bioscience Association of Maine has awarded five scholarships to Maine middle school students. These enthusiastic students will attend a 1-week-long summer science camp at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM). All 5 awardees attend a school that participated in ME Bioscience Day 2022. The goal of the MSSM Summer Science Camp Scholarship and ME Bioscience Day is to get students excited about science, while also bringing awareness to the career opportunities within Maine life sciences industry.

Meet Five Future Scientists: MSSM Science Camp Scholarship Recipients

He has a dog named August, and enjoys playing lacrosse, skiing, and running cross country. His favorite subjects are math, science, and English. He has an older brother, and is very excited about what MSSM has to offer.

Oliver Sands

Oliver Sands is a rising 7 th  grader at Scarborough Middle School. He loves anything Lego and science, especially marine biology. His favorite hobby is reading and he really enjoys going to the beach with family and friends to kayak and discover sea life. Throughout the year he spends time playing defense in soccer, skiing and tennis. He is already studying to become a Marine Biologist and is looking forward to solving future environmental problems. Oliver is excited and appreciates the opportunity to attend MSSM this summer.

Ayla Smith

Ayla will be a freshman at Scarborough High School this year. Science has always been interesting to her, and she especially loves learning about space and nature. She also enjoys riddles and solving puzzles. Ayla is also involved in theater and has been in multiple productions. Outside of school, Ayla enjoys reading, making art, snowboarding, and spending time with family and friends. She loves traveling and is so excited to experience something new
this summer.

Frankie Veroneau

Frankie will be a 9th grader at Gorham High School in the fall. His favorite subjects in school are science and art. He loves to sail, cook, build in the garage and care for his backyard chickens. He is part of the school robotics team and loves the mechanical work best. Frankie hopes to one day be a Mechanical Engineer.

About MSSM

MSSM is a specialized school located in Limestone, Maine. Their Summer Camp program provides middle schoolers an opportunity to continue their education, discover new opportunities, and inspire their academic journey. Students attend camp with like-minded peers, and are guided by a dedicated faculty who share their passion for STEM. MSSM inspires young minds to pursue their favorite subjects through innovative and interactive classes and outdoor activities.

About ME Bioscience Day

ME Bioscience Day is a statewide event that focuses on educating Maine’s youth about different career paths and opportunities within the life sciences industry in Maine. Typically, professionals in these fields volunteer to visit local middle school classrooms to talk with students about their career in science, their daily tasks, and the opportunities that are available in such careers. In 2022, ME Bioscience Day was hosted as a hybrid event with both in-person volunteers and virtual video formats, this allowed us to reach middle schools all across Maine. Students that attended any of these participating schools were eligible to apply for the MSSM Summer Science Camp Scholarship.
